There are three types of load cell seal technologies: environmental seal, airtight seal and welded seal. Each technology offers different levels of airtight and watertight protection. This protection is essential for its acceptable performance. Sealing technology protects internal measuring components from damage.

Environmental sealing techniques use a rubber guide, glue on the cover plate, or potting the gauge chamber. Environmental seals protect the load cell from damage caused by dust and debris. This technique provides moderate protection against humidity. Environmental seals do not protect the load cell from water immersion or pressure cleaning.

Sealing technology Encloses the meter bag with a welded cap or sleeve. The cable entry area uses a welded barrier to prevent moisture from "wick sucking" into the load cell. This technique is most common in stainless steel load cells for heavy flushing or chemical applications. A sealed load cell is a more expensive load cell, but it has a longer service life in corrosive environments. Sealed load cells are the most cost-effective solution.

The welded sealed load cell is the same as the sealed load cell except at the outlet of the load cell cable. Weld-sealed load cells typically have the same load cell cable attachment as environmental sealed load cells. The instrument area is protected by a welded seal; However, the cable inlet is not. Sometimes, welded seal technology has a conduit adapter for the cable to provide additional protection. Weld-sealed load cells are suitable for environments where load cells can sometimes become wet. They are not ideal for heavy flushing applications.
